At Perkins our students have the opportunity to learn leadership skills. Students are given the chance to run for office and conduct a campaign. Students can run for President, Vice President, Treasurer, grade level representatives., etc. Students have a forum in which they give speeches to the student body at a large school assembly in order to gain their votes. Mr. Ortega is our ASB advisor who leads and guides our students through the electoral process and then through the weekly sessions of student goverment.
The Student Council conducts a variety of events and activities throughout the school year. With input from all students and staff, the Student Council sets a yearly agenda of activities that promote school spirit, charitable work, and positive recognition. Fundraisers are conducted to earn monies to pay for student activities and to support classroom learning.
Our entire eighth grade class has a chance to see our government at work. They attend live court hearings at the courthouse in downtown San Diego. Our student also have the responsibility to prepare our school for important visits by local dignitaries.
