Astronomy Club

Out of This World with Perkins Astronomy Club

How high can you soar at Perkins School? Well, the sky is the limit.

We have an after-school Astronomy Club that lets kids conduct really cool experiments.
Our club will meet every Wednesday after school in the teacher lounge or school auditorium. Students will learn:
1. How to read latitude and longitude on planet Earth.
2. How to identify major features on the moon.
3. How to identify 15 major constellations.
4. How to distinguish between a planet and a star.
5. How to use a telescope and a star finder program.
6. Attend a meteor shower party in the mountains.

The Astronomy Club meets from November to February every year after the time change when the sun sets early.  At Perkins school dismisses at 3:30 pm.  In December the sun sets at about 4:40 pm in San Diego allowing our students enough time for the skies to darken and observe stars from the school playground.

In the Fall of 2022 our school acquired a brand new 9 inch Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope thanks to the Mitsubishi Cement Corporation.  Please come and enjoy our Astronomy Club.
